The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has retired its eTax software.
ATO Assistant Commissioner, Graham Whyte stated in an ATO media release, that the ATO has replaced eTax with myTax for this year’s tax season. MyTax, which was only previously available to individuals with “straight forward tax affairs” (i.e. salaries and wages), has now been made available for “any Australian who wants to lodge their own tax return regardless of their tax affairs.”
According to the media release, myTax can be accessed on any smartphone, tablet or computer and was used for 1.75 million lodgements last year. Whyte said the ATO hoped to see three million lodgements through myTax.
eTax was launched in 1999 and myTax was launched in 2014.
Whyte stated that for those who choose to do their tax return via a tax agent, to make sure that their tax agent was registered and that a list of registered tax agents could be found on the Tax Practitioners Board Register.
