After months of global heat extremes and severe fire conditions in some regions of Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has formally proclaimed an El Niño.
Climate scientists have warned that Australia may experience catastrophic heatwaves this summer when coupled with the underlying warming of climate change.
Greg Mullins, a climate councillor, claimed that climate change only amplifies the effects of El Niño conditions by causing even higher temperatures and more extreme weather, such as strong winds that can convert flames into infernos.
These extreme weather events, according to Simon Bradshaw, director of research for the Climate Council, are precisely what climatologists have been warning the public about for decades.
