Fair Work Ombudsman outlines best approach to apprenticeships

The Fair Work Ombudsman have outlined the best approach for employees to take with apprenticeships in their latest newsletter.

The Fair Work Ombudsman provides advice for employers for all stages of the apprenticeship–making it official (the beginning), progress (the middle) and completion.

“Taking someone from a first year apprentice to a qualified tradesperson is a big commitment. So making sure you understand the rules around hiring and strategies for keeping your new employee is vital.”

The advice that the Fair Work Ombudsman provides for making it official revolves around making the required training arrangements with the applicable state and training authority. The newsletter provides links to the state and training authority in every state.

The advice that the Fair Work Ombudsman provides on progress focuses on the importance of keeping track of an apprentice’s progress, due to the fact that their pay will increase over time and/or when they gain more skills. The advice also focuses on making sure the apprentice knows whether their pay will increase either over time, or as they gain more skills, or both.

The advice that the Fair Work Ombudsman provides for completion is a reminder to employers to make it clear to an apprentice about what happens when they have finished their apprenticeship.
