This week is Food Safety Week.

Kicking off yesterday and ending on Saturday, Food Safety Week is the biggest week of the year for the Food Safety Information Council.

This year’s theme is ‘raw and risky’ foods due to major food poisoning outbreaks in recent years being linked to risky raw foods, such as: unpasteurized milk, raw eggs, bean/seed sprouts, frozen berries and lettuce.

According to a media release from the Food Safety Information Council, there are 4.1 million cases of food poisoning in Australia, with 32,000 hospitalisations, 1 millions visits to the doctor, and 86 deaths.

The media release also states that last year’s Food Safety Week was one of the most successful. This year there will be multiple events, such as daily Food Safety Webinars run by Merieux Nutrisciences.

Previous Food Safety Week themes have included: hand washing and cross contamination, cooking for family and friends, protecting tiny tummies and sensitive systems, food on the move, food safety messages for young people leaving home, back to basics, food adventures, safe food, myths and mastery–debunking incorrect beliefs, vulnerable populations, cross contamination, shopping food safety, temperature danger zone, and busting food safety myths.
