Five out of nine ice rinks being used for the winter Olympics in China will use CO2 refrigeration systems while the remaining four will use R4449A.

Typically, venues that do not need to maintain ice all year round will use traditional refrigerant. The switch to CO2 increases ice-making efficiency by 30% to save up to 2000000kW of electricity per year.

The decision to use eco friendly refrigerant has garnered support from the International Olympic Committee.
