A Cool Million

Global HVACR giants Rocky Mountain, AIRAH and ASHRAE have partnered together to establish a new international competition, Global Cooling Prize, to encourage innovation in energy-efficient cooling technology for residential use with the aim to have a lowered impact on the climate compared to current RAC unit standards. With $US1 million up for grabs in prize money to go towards investment into the commercialisation of the winning solution, lucky shortlisted contestants will also gain access to a $US2 million pool to support the development of their projects.

As the global middle class expands, purchase of white goods increases in developing countries along with energy demand. Air conditioning energy demand is set to triple the CO2 emissions output by 2050 with an estimated installation of 3.3 billion AC units around the world. The development of an energy-efficient prototype could potentially lower CO2 emissions by 100 gigatonnes and mitigate global warming temperatures of up to 0.5°C by 2100. Competition submissions will undergo real-world testing in a heat-stressed city in India and must qualify material, water consumption, full-load power consumption, and maintenance requirements whilst remain commercially affordable.

Global Cooling Prize officially launched this week on 12-13 November at the Global Cooling Innovation Summit in New Delhi, India and will remain open for the next two years.
