Households that are participating in the Energy Efficiency Improvement Scheme (EEIS) could save $1,600 a year, according to a review of the Scheme.
Simon Corbell, Minister for the Environment tabled a review of the EEIS in the Legislative Assembly last Thursday. The review spanned a little over a year–from when the scheme was implemented on January 1 2013, until March 31 2014–and showed that the reduction of Greenhouse gases were the equivalent of almost 238.000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
The review also showed that over 24,000 households participated in the EEIS and as a result could save approximately $1,600 a year. The review also revealed a high level of satisfaction with the EEIS from these participating households.
The EEIS is an ACT-wide scheme introduced by the ACT government as an energy savings target due to its high level of energy use, despite its low residential electricity and gas prices. The EEIS includes obligations for electricity retailers to meet energy savings targets, not only in households but also small-to-medium enterprises.
The next step for the ACT government is to determine the future of the EEIS as it is legislated to end in December 2015.
