The European Commission has agreed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent by 2030.
The European Commission has agreed to an integrated 2030 Policy Framework to continue the progress already underway with its climate and energy targets for 2020.The 2020 targets were to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent from the 1990 levels (this target is likely to be surpassed), raising the share of EU energy consumption from renewable resources to 20 percent and a 20 percent rise in energy efficiency in Europe.
As well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the Framework also aims to increase the share of renewable energy and energy efficiency by at least 27 percent.
According to a video on the EU Action on Climate website, the EU aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050. Greenhouse gas emissions have already been reduced by 18 percent since 1990.
The video also states that reducing greenhouse gas emissions will provide opportunities for economic growth, competitiveness and innovation, as well as reduce dependence on imported energy.
