This week is Privacy Awareness Week, is your business privacy aware?

Privacy Awareness Week is an initiative of the Asia Pacific Privacy Authorities (APPA) Forum. The APPA Forum is held every year to promote awareness of privacy issues and the importance of the protection of personal information. This year, Privacy Awareness Week is being held from May 3-9.

This year’s theme is Privacy Everyday, which emphasises that privacy should be a focus for all businesses and encourages business to incorporate privacy protection measures as part of their daily business practices.

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, who is a member on the APPA Forum, have published tips and information on their website for businesses on how to protect the privacy of their clients, as well as how to protect your own personal information and yourself on social media.

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner’s website provides ten tips for businesses for protecting the privacy of their clients. These tips include but are not limited to familiarising with privacy policies and procedures, preparing for disclosure, only collecting & accessing personal information that is needed and constantly being aware of taking care of privacy & keeping information secure. The ten tips for businesses for protecting the privacy of clients can be found here.

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner’s website also provides a Guide to Securing Personal Information, which can be found here, as well as guidance if someone posts unwanted material about yourself on social media.

More information on Privacy Awareness Week 2015 can be found here.
