According to the Herald Sun, Joe Cosentino, a 25-year-old refrigerator mechanic, was killed by the blast outside his Mulgrave home just two weeks before Christmas 2011. A hearing this week revealed that the explosion is believed to have been caused by a gas leak from one of six cylinders kept in Mr Cosentino’s work van.
Cool Dynamics, the employer, is facing charges of failing to provide a safe working environment, failing to provide training and failing to ensure persons were not exposed to risk.
A two-day committal hearing this week heard a gas leak from one of six cylinders kept in Mr Cosentino’s work van may have caused the blast.
A Worksafe report found there were two explosions, one in the body of the vehicle and one within the vehicle’s cabinet.
Lawyers for the Cool Dynamics appeared at the County Court on Wednesday.
The court heard the company would argue whether any of the alleged breaches actually caused the death of Mr Cosentino.
More than 20 witnesses, including 12 employees, are expected to be called to give evidence when the matter goes to trial next year.
