Have your say on the Australian Consumer Law Review

In April, RACCA Australia published an article on NSW Fair Trading encouraging businesses to contribute to a review of Australian Consumer Law.

Now the interim report of the review has been released.

According to a NSW Fair Trading media release, consultations with key stakeholders were held to acquire feedback on the interim report. The interim report was shaped by public feedback and consultations undertaken on the Issues Paper, as well as findings from this year’s Australian Consumer Survey.

The media release also states that the Australian Consumer Law review is being undertaken to establish whether the law has been effective and how it can be improved to benefit both traders and consumers, without imposing unnecessary red tape. It is the first time that Australian Consumer Law has been reviewed since its commencement five years ago.

The interim report is open for comments and submissions with the aim of seeking views on options to enhance the Law’s effectiveness in a variety of areas, including but not limited to: product safety, consumer guarantees and unfair contract term protections.

Comments and submissions close on December 9 with the final report due to be released in March 2017, a year after the review commenced.

The Australian Consumer Law Review Interim Report can be found here.
