Veolia has been awarded a long-term contract by Lend Lease, to operate and maintain the district energy, cooling and water treatment schemes at Barangaroo South.
According to a report by Climate Control News, the contract will involve the operation and maintenance of a 62MW district cooling network, a high voltage embedded electrical network and a recycled water treatment plant.
Barangaroo South is a shared infrastructure designed and built by Lend Lease comprising of commercial, residential and retail buildings and will be Australia’s first large scale carbon neutral community. This will be achieved by Veolia having cooling in the form of cold water from a single central chiller plant and a district wide chiller plant being cooled by water from Sydney Harbour. These chiller plants will eliminate the need of individual air conditioning plants for each building, as well as reduce electrical demand and Greenhouse Gas emissions. Barangaroo South is also aiming to target the highest Green Star and NABERS ratings.
Barangaroo South is owned by the NSW government, spans over 7.5 hectares and will be home to 18,000 residents and 23,000 office workers. Half of the Barangaroo South precinct will be able to be accessed publicly. Completion of Barangaroo South is expected to be completed between 2020 and 2022.
