AIRAH are conducting research with the Victorian Government to “identify barriers and solutions to energy efficiency in the walk-in cool room sector”.
AIRAH are collaborating with the Department of Environment, Water, Land and Planning (DEWLP) Victoria and the Expert Group, and they are conducting the research as there is “no readily available data or industry insight into the technical or behavioural coal face issues faced by this sector and how energy saving, and emissions reductions can be achieved effectively.”
AIRAH are conducting the research through an online survey. The survey will help identify the key barriers to energy efficiency so a face-to-face workshop can be constructed, with in-person interviews to follow. The project will end with a published report by AIRAH on the research findings including: barriers, solutions and proposed next steps to improving efficiency in the walk-in cool room sector.
The survey states that improving the efficiency of cool rooms “has the potential to both reduce energy costs for businesses and reduce food waste, which potentially may have even greater financial benefits for businesses.” It is estimated that there are over 65,000 walk-in cool rooms in Victoria, potentially using 1,200 GWh per annum and wasting up to 25 percent energy.
This isn’t the first survey that AIRAH have distributed this year, this one follows a survey on refrigeration safety training which was distributed earlier this year.
The walk-in cool room survey closes on 11 June and can be completed here.
