AIRAH have published an article on the ABCs of controls, detailing everything everyone needs to know about them.
The article emphasises that controls and instrumentation are “an integral part of today’s state-of-the-art HVAC&R industry” as they are used to “monitor system performance, maintain conditions, ensure comfort and improve energy efficiency.”
The article provides details of what people need to know about controls by outlining key facts and tips using corresponding letters of the Alphabet. These facts and tips are: A for Analytics, B for Building Management Systems (BMS), C for Calibration, D for Data, F for Facility manager, H for Habits, I for Instrumentation, I for Internet of Things (IoT), K for Know your limits, L for Look first, M for Machine learning, O for Over-riding points, P for protocols, R for Rubbish in rubbish out, S for Strategies, T for The Edge (Amsterdam), U for User access, V for vendor training, W for web-based, and Z for Zero emissions.
The article also goes into detail of four common fundamental control optimisation issues, which include: set-points out of design and not achievable, control bands too tight, poor VAV control biased to air volume, and demanding calculations using P + I loops.
