Christmas and the New Year are approaching, while it can be daunting to realise how fast this year has gone by, it is time to let your employees know of your Christmas close-down period.
Under the Electrical, Electronic and Communications Contracting Award 2010, which electrical contractors are covered under, “an employer may, by two months notice, declare that the establishment, project or business will observe a complete Christmas-New Year close down.”
Employers whose employees are covered under the Electrical, Electronic and Communications Contracting Award 2010, need to give employees written notice of their close down, by the matching date in October. For example, if the close down commences on December 21, notice needs to be given on October 21. The Christmas-New Year close down period can range between two to four weeks, depending on the business.
Under the Electrical, Electronic and Communications Contracting Award 2010, employees can receive annual leave on a pro rata basis (if it is available to them) and take annual leave in advance if their employer has agreed to it. Employees are also entitled to public holiday pay during this close down.
