NSW Complaints Register turns one

Last year, RACCA Australia published articles on the establishment and progression of the NSW Complaints Register. This week the Register celebrated its first anniversary.

NSW Fair Trading’s media release states that they introduced the NSW Complaints Register “to help NSW consumers make informed decisions and give businesses an incentive to improve customer service.” It lists traders that are subjected to 10 or more complaints to NSW Fair Trading in a calendar month.

The media release also states that NSW Fair Trading commemorated the first anniversary by collating data from the 13 Complaints Registesr published to date, which includes last month’s results. The data revealed that during this first year a total of 4,765 complaints against 79 businesses, were submitted.

The data also revealed that Harvey Norman, Apple, Ray White, The Good Guys, and Samsung Electronics received the highest number of complaints. Harvey Norman, Apple, and The Good Guys appeared on all 13 Complaints Registers. However the data also revealed that 29 businesses appeared on the Complaints Register just once.

Acting NSW Fair Trading Commissioner, Andrew Gavrielatos, emphasised that the results of the 29 businesses only appearing once on the Complaints Registers was proof of its success.

“This is a clear sign that the Register is having the desired effect of encouraging businesses to improve the services and products they provide to NSW consumers.”
